Kensington (JHB) Unterkünfte
Kensington is an old suburb of Johannesburg in Gauteng. Having been established by Max Langermann in 1897, it is indeed among the oldest suburbs in the city. During the 1980’s and 90’s it was renowned as a hang-out for the artsy, intellectual Johannesburg set, and while its identity as such is no longer so strong, there are other aspects of the suburb that will never change.
Kensington was developed on a group of koppies (small, flat-topped hills) which gives the neighbourhood a ‘hilly identity’ and some of the homes benefit from this with a good view. The area was also planted with many trees during the early 1900’s which has resulted in a vibe similar to those of woodlands areas.
Kensington is located to the east of Johannesburg’s central business district and is bordered to the east by Bedfordview. Its position within the city makes it accessible and ensures visitors are close to some really interesting Joburg attractions.
One of Joburg’s trendy neighbourhoods, Melville is right next door, so those who enjoy city night life will not be left wonting. Kensington itself is also a lively restaurant area and is also home to a number of antique shops. As with most parts of Johannesburg, shopping malls aren’t far away, and the giant Eastgate Shopping Centre is right on Kensington’s doorstep. Newtown, one of the city centre’s gentrified suburbs is a living art gallery with graffiti works splashing the public spaces left right and centre. It is a five minute drive away.
For a more sedate, suburban vibe, the Bruma Lake Flea Market is a nice place to visit on a weekend morning, while Gillooly’s Farm in neighbouring Bedfordview is a great place to escape the city for a picnic. It is also intriguing given its status as a working farm in the heart of a city.
