Benoni is a small town on the East Rand of Johannesburg, the commercial centre of South Africa. Like other East Rand towns such as Bedfordview, Benoni has its origins in the Gold Rush of the 1880’s. After the initial discovery of gold in the area where Johannesburg is today, prospectors extended their search and came across yet more deposits on the farmlands where Benoni is today. Soon enough a town developed around the mines in order to serve the mines.
As is the case with many of the East Rand towns, Benoni, despite beginning as a town independent of Johannesburg, has been engulfed by the big city and it now falls under the same municipality as Johannesburg. Having said that though, there is no doubt that Benoni has its own distinct character, as do each of the suburbs within it.
For starters, Benoni is renowned for the extraordinary number of stables in the area. It has been said that Benoni has more horse stables per square kilometre than any other place in the southern hemisphere! Thus the place is a horse-lover’s dream. The number of small holdings also provides an air of spaciousness which you don’t get in a city centre, defined as it is by high rise buildings and shopping malls.
Benoni is also famous for its high density of schools and its lakes. In fact it is sometimes referred to as ‘The City of Lakes’. Between the stables, lakes and schools, the impression you’ll get of Benoni and its wide, tree-lined streets is of a relaxed, pretty town, where you can enjoy suburbia at its best.
