Germiston Verblyf
Germiston is one in a slew of towns on Johannesburg’s East Rand. The East Rand is a strip of land east of Johannesburg in Gauteng where gold was discovered. Germiston, like most of the other East Rand towns, sprang up after a mine was established there. It was named after Germiston in Glasgow, Scotland, the home of one of the first successful gold prospectors in the Germiston area.
Today it is home to the Rand Refinery, one of the largest gold refineries in the world. It is claimed that up to 70% of the world’s gold passes through the Rand Refinery before it can go on the market. Germiston is generally an industrial town, and apart from the big refinery, it is also home to the Rand Airport, one of the busiest civil airports in South Africa, and many large companies have their headquarters there.
Germiston is surrounded by other East Rand towns, with Bedfordview and Edenvale to its north, Benoni to the east and Alberton to the south. The heart of Johannesburg is of course to the west.
The big city and all its attractions and business opportunities are within a 15 to 20 minute drive of Germiston. Its industrial nature combined with its proximity to central Johannesburg make Germiston an obvious choice for business travellers. Leisure travellers will find it slightly less appealing, but despite its lack of glitzy tourist attractions, there are still things to do and some of Joburg’s renowned shopping malls are very nearby.
Germiston also happens to be the seat of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (Greater Johannesburg) and has the biggest railway junction in South Africa.
