Brenton on Sea Verblyf

Brenton-on-Sea is a delightful little holiday town along the South Western Cape’s famous Garden Route. It is 500 kilometres from Cape Town, 60 kilometres from the airport in George and just 15 kilometres to the west of Knysna. In short, it is an easily accessible little town surrounded by some of the most picturesque coastline in the country.

Brenton-on-Sea experiences a Mediterranean climate, like much of the Western Cape, with wet winters from May to July and warm, sunny summers from December until March. Generally the weather is extremely amiable and ensures that one can partake in the many outdoors activities in the area without too much hassle.

The little settlement gets its name from Sir Jahleel Brenton, the man who declared Knysna’s harbour. It is surrounded by the Goukamma Nature Reserve and characterised by the steep fynbos slopes which stretch down towards the sea. It is on these fynbos-rich slopes that the famous Brenton Blue Butterfly can be spotted. The spectacular butterfly was thought to have gone extinct when the last one was spotted in Nature’s Valley, only for it to turn up again at Brenton-on-Sea in the early 1990’s. The Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve was set up to preserve this unique creature.

Butterflies aside, some of the other natural attractions in the area include the beautiful beach and the surrounding reserve. Goukamma is home to some beautiful indigenous forest, which of course is home to numerous birds, insects and other small living beings. There is plenty of hiking in and around Brenton and canoeing, fishing, beach walks and even paragliding are all popular activities.

In season (June-September), whale sightings from the cliffs above the beach are excellent and the little town of Knysna, next door, is just waiting to be explored!
