Cathkin Park is a picturesque area in the foothills of the Central Drakensberg. It is located in KwaZulu Natal between the N3 highway, which links Durban and Johannesburg, and Lesotho. The mountains provide the most spectacular backdrop and the area is known for its outdoor adventure activities. No one will be bored visiting this part of South Africa!
In Cathkin Park, the mighty Drakensberg Mountains tower over the region and gradually soften into the lush rolling hills of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. On the milder side, literally and figuratively speaking, opportunities for golf and angling abound. There are numerous golf resorts and in the area and the well-stocked dams ensure that fishing is an ever-popular activity there.
The Drakensberg Mountain itself is obviously a major draw card too. The Giant’s Castle Game Reserve, which is named after a series of peaks which resemble a castle, lies just to the west of Cathkin Park. It is home to an abundance of hiking trails which will challenge even the fittest hikers and then reward them with breath-taking vistas. There are also plenty of opportunities for mountain biking and horse-riding on the lower slopes.
The reserve is also a known breeding ground for rare bearded vultures and is a recognised site for San rock paintings. In fact, the Drakensberg region is said to have one of the richest collections of rock art sites in South Africa!
Other activities in the area include taking a canopy tour or for those who prefer more sedate entertainment, towns like Estcourt and Mooi River, and indeed the whole Midlands Meander are with in an easy distance and ready to be explored.
