Central Drakensberg Logement
The main access point to the Central Drakensberg is the town of Winterton. It is a typical pioneer town and is a centre for the agricultural area surrounding it, which is renowned for wheat, beef and maize. Other settlements which lie in the foothills of the Central Drakensberg include Estcourt, Mooi River and Nottingham Road.
This section of the Drakensberg, like the entire range, is defined by a series of imposing cliffs, soaring peaks and deep valleys. The Champagne Valley is one of the most renowned, and surprisingly, it’s not for its hiking paths or particular abundance of fauna and flora or rock art. Instead, the Champagne Valley is known for being the home of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, a world class choir group with angelic voices.
Two definitive peaks in this region are Matadi and Makheka, which at 3446 metres and 3461 metres respectively, are two of the highest peaks in Southern Africa! Some of the other peaks which characterise the Central Drakensberg are Cathedral Peak, Organ Pipes, Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle. The climbs and hikes in this section of the ‘Berg tend to require a goof level of fitness and skill, especially Monk’s Cowl, which is said to be one of the toughest climbs in the Drakensberg range.
While hiking is the best way to experience the Central Drakensberg’s collection of plants, birds and San rock paintings, there are alternative ways to enjoy the area, some more sedate than others. The foothills of the Central Drakensberg for example, are very popular for trout fishing, and exploring the lower reaches is also really fun from atop a horse. For the adventurous there is rafting and zip lining.
