Ceres Accommodatie
Ceres is well known in the Western Cape for being one of the most important fruit-producing areas in the province. It is roughly divided into 4 main parts which each boast varying sceneries and different produce. Throughout the Ceres region though, the backdrop is provided by towering mountains and orchards, and much of the Ceres accommodation can be found on working farms.
Ceres is located just 150 kilometres from Cape Town, and yet the tranquillity you will find there is comparable to being in a place much further away. The ‘Warm Bokkeveld’ region is an open valley and is renowned for the potato and onion packing industry. The ‘Bo Swaarmoed’ area is where people head to check out the snow, go cherry-picking and admire the views across the valley. The particularly mountainous ‘Koue Bokkeveld’ is the heart of the apple, pear and vegetable region while the Tanqua Karoo, with its semi-arid landscapes and indigenous fauna flora complete the Ceres picture.
Given that the fruit industry is such a prominent one in these parts, it is fitting that part of the joy of visiting is getting a taste, literally, of the fruit farming world. Apart from choosing Ceres accommodation on a working farm, and spending time observing what life on such a farm is really like, there are endless opportunities for buying fresh fruit, dried fruit, preserves and fruit juice to take back to the city with you.
The surrounding mountain ranges offer myriad hiking routes and in winter (June-July) numerous 4x4 trails will lead you to the famous Ceres snow. There are also plenty of mountain bike tracks in the area and enough fishing opportunities to keep a keen fisherman occupied for a weekend. The area is also rife with San rock art.
