Christiana Accommodatie
The small town of Christiana has a population of just over 15 000 and it is located in the North West Province of South Africa. Its situation on the N12 freeway, which connects Kimberley and Johannesburg, makes it a convenient stop over for long distance journeys, including those to and from Cape Town.
The town lies in the heart of the North West Diamond Fields and was once a prolific diamond mining area. The town was established in fact to help to control (and thus minimise) land disputes over diamond discoveries in the surrounding areas.
Established in 1870 on a farm then known as Zoutpansdrift (Salt Pan’s Drift), it was named Christiana after the daughter of President Pretorius, the president of what was then known as the Traansvaal. Today the town’s position on the banks of the Vaal River means that it is not only a farming hub, but also an attractive tourism destination.
Where farming is concerned, maize is a major crop (Christiana forms a corner of the maize triangle) while other agricultural produce includes potatoes, onions, sorghum, groundnuts and beef. Also just outside of town is the Callaho Warmblood Sport Horses stud farm, one of the most well-known horse stud farms in South Africa.
As for tourism, the Vaal River is popular for water sport enthusiasts and fishermen. There are also plenty of historical sites in the area including San rock art and the provincial heritage site, Stows Kopje, which is home to prehistoric rock engravings.
A historical site specific to the town is the Diggers’ Diamond Museum, which celebrates the area’s diamond mining history with a number diamond mining-related artefacts like old equipment and photographs.
