Citrusdal, as the name suggests, is a citrus-growing region in the Southern Cape. It is situated approximately 170 kilometres from Cape Town, making Citrusdal extremely accessible and is ideally located to city dwellers looking for a tranquil break. Having been recognised as the ‘Gateway to the Cederberg’, Citrusdal promises a beautiful setting and an array of outdoor activities.
The Cederberg is a beautiful range of mountains which are home to many indigenous plants and animals. There are always conservation efforts going on in the area with some focus being placed on the rare Cape leopard, reptiles and amphibians of the Cederberg as well as the endemic fish species found in the Olifants River. The best way to experience these gems though is to explore the many attractions in Citrusdal and surrounding areas.
Citrusdal is the ideal destination for active travellers as there are so many hikes and walking trails in the surrounding Cederberg. For those who prefer wheels, there are exciting, scenic mountain bike trails and myriad 4x4 routes. There are also numerous scenic drives around Citrusdal which provide great views of the surrounding area, and are certainly a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. While driving over some of the mountain passes, you’ll have elevated views of the mountains and orchards while others will have you meandering along the back roads watching as the sweeping farmlands change as you pass by.
The rock formations in the Cederberg are ideal for rock climbing and attract many members of the international climbing fraternity. Citrusdal is within easy access of many of the best climbing spots. You’ll be sure to bump into a couple of climbers at the many campsites in the area.
Travel further afield and you’ll come across the Citrusdal Baths. Situated on a citrus farm in the scenic Olifants River Valley, the natural, hot spring is certainly worthy of a visit. With copious amounts of hot water bubbling to the surface - approximately 105 000 litres every hour – locals and holidaymakers flock to the baths during the cold winter months. If you are looking for a more private hot spring experience, remember there is a great deal of accommodation with Jacuzzis in the area.
Citrusdal believe it or not, is also a great base for keen anglers. In fact, anglers have the chance to contribute to the conservation of the ‘Rooivlerkie’, Clanwilliam Sand Fish and the Barnard’s ‘Klipbaber’, all endemic to the region. This is done by removing the bass, carp and rainbow trout which currently compete for habitat.
If on the other hand, you simply want to relax and take in the scenery, Citrusdal provides visitors with a comfortable stay, catering to the varied needs of any kind of traveller.
