Coffee Bay Verblyf
Coffee Bay offers travellers the epitome of rural South African life and is a hugely popular destination because of its picturesque setting and seriously laid back vibe. Accommodation in Coffee Bay tends towards the rustic with a couple of backpackers lodges, a campsite, a few basic hotels and a bunch of self-catering accommodation available.
Coffee Bay is to be found on the Eastern Cape's Wild Coast, a region which lives up to its name! Coffee Bay is one of only 2 towns on the coast serviced by a tarred road, and even so, the windy, pot-holed tarmac makes for an adventure-filled journey. The nearest cities are Mthatha and East London.
While no-one is exactly sure how Coffee Bay got its name, the accepted legend is that a ship carrying coffee beans crashed on this coast in the mid 1800's. Some of the beans put down roots and for a while a few sad-looking coffee trees grew on this section of the coast. However, the salty conditions were not ideal and the coffee trees no longer grow in the area, although the name stuck. Today people frequent Coffee Bay for its laid back hippy vibe.
The town is tiny and is the sort of place where strolling around the gravel roads will inevitably lead you past little handicraft stalls of hand-made shell jewellery and macramé. There is a lot to do apart from wandering the streets.
Coffee Bay is situated amongst a network of trails which criss-cross the hills and coastline, taking one through rural Transkei villages and coastal forest. These trails can be undertaken by foot or by horse. Just 10 kilometres away you'll find Hole-in-the-Wall, a Wild Coast attraction famous for the hole carved into a giant chunk of rock just off the coast, a result of erosion by the pounding waves. The beach at Coffee Bay is also great for swimming and surfing, providing one of the only consistent waves on the Wild Coast.

Coffee Bay
Except for the potholes on the road,Coffee Bay was fun. The local chief and the people were also very helpful when one of our cars had a puncture after it hit a pothole.

Coffee Bay
Coffee Bay is an awesome place to visit. Very chilled and low key. Loved the "untouched" vibe and the mingling with locals.
Nice hike to "Hole in the wall" too. Definitely will go again :)

Coffee Bay
Coffee Bay is very rural and remote making it a very special and exclusive place to visit. The environment is unique as nature lovers are spoiled with the variety of bird species and other wild life to be seen here. One of my hobbies is photography and there was plenty of opportunities to take photographs. We visited Coffee bay after a rainy period which made the short gravel road to Hole-in-the-Wall all the more adventurous. The Hole-in-the-Wall scene was as beautiful as I expected and I could tick off this "item" on my bucket list but I cannot exclude the possibility to put a visit to the area back on my bucket list as there are other unique things to do, for instance to look for the red mud crap. From Coffee Bay we visited the M'Bashe lighthouse and en-route we saw four Xhosa boys dressed in colourful blankets, rubbed with red mud and armed with kieries presumably busy with their initiation rituals. The greater Coffee Bay area is indeed as beautiful as the write-ups, true African but not as wild as the name Wild Coast suggests (maybe because we are Africans).

Coffee Bay
We were not in Coffee Bay for very long. For an over-night stop it was a bit far off the beaten track, but I'm sure the fisherman love it. It was an experience for us and we saw whales...............not all bad!!
