Dargle Accommodatie

Dargle is a tiny settlement which consists of a small, but wholesome community. You’ll find it in the Dargle Valley, in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It’s close to Pietermaritzburg and lies in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains. Its nearest ‘big’ town is Howick and the little hamlet forms part of the charming Midlands Meander. These are all very good characteristics for a holiday destination.

Dargle, like most of the Midlands’ small towns, is the hub of a farming community. Life there is simple, with an abundance of vegetable gardens, happy chickens laying eggs and contented cows waiting to be milked. The combination of fresh produce, fresh air and beautiful scenery ensures that all who visit leave feeling happy and refreshed.

The scenery referred to above is iconic for its endless hills, lush greenery, indigenous forests and dams. Green is very much the signature colour of the landscape, especially in the hot, wet summers when late afternoon thunder storms are common (winters are both drier and a lot cooler).

The Dargle Conservancy, situated near the town, is a community initiative and a treasure trove of sights. Within its boundaries you’ll find wetlands, indigenous forest and indigenous grasslands, and of course, all the little creatures and plants which call these habitats home. Among them are numerous wild flower species, butterflies, birds and trees. Anyone with even a slight interest in these things will be blown away by the variety on show.

One can enjoy the area by foot, on a bike or on horse-back and other ways to fill your time include checking out the Midlands Meander and popping down to the local market for fresh produce, artisanal bread, hand-made cheese and more. It takes place on the first Sunday of each month.
