Eastern Cape Verblyf - 16
The Eastern Cape is a province in South Africa with a diverse range of landscapes and activities. Eastern Cape accommodation can be anything from a cosy self-catering cottage in the Amatole Mountains to a 5-star game lodge or informal backpackers on the Wild Coast.
Geographically speaking, the Eastern Cape has it all. In the far South of the province, close to the border with the Western Cape, you will find temperate rainforest, some of it protected in the spectacular Tsitsikamma National Park. The western part of the province on the other hand mainly consists of semi-arid Karoo.
One of the towns within the Karoo is Graaff-Reinet – a treasure trove of beautiful architecture. It is also unique in that it is completely surrounded by a national park, namely Camdeboo. The Camdeboo National Park is a paradise for photographers with its open spaces and weird rock formations. Nearby you will find yet another stunning reserve, the Mountain Zebra National Park.
The east of the province is a long coastline which meets the warm Indian Ocean. Some of its main cities like Port Elizabeth and East London are located on the coast. As you move northwards along the coast, it becomes increasingly rugged, giving rise to the name the Wild Coast. The Wild Coast forms part of the traditional Xhosa homelands (sometimes still referred to as the Transkei), providing an interesting cultural twist to the experience.
What you find in the Transkei are green undulating hills, dotted with Xhosa villages and leading to the untamed coast. The Wild Coast is a traveller’s paradise due to long uninterrupted stretches of beach with interesting rock formations and breath-taking gorges.
Jeffrey’s Bay is a small town on the coast and is another jewel in the Eastern Cape coast’s pride. Supertubes is a renowned surf spot rated 5th in the world.
Other Eastern Cape attractions include hot springs in Aliwal North, the annual National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Addo Elephant National Park and the delightful little town of Hogsback tucked away in the Amatole Mountains. Speaking of mountains, the Eastern Cape has plenty apart from the Amatole range. Sections of the Drakensberg, the Sneeuberg and the Stormberge all contribute to the geography of the Eastern Cape.
If you are looking for an exciting destination which offers beautiful scenery and lots of culture, then you’ve just found it.

Cradock
Though it has seen better days with respect to its infrastructure, especially the roads, Cradock remains a town with an interesting history. It is probably most famous (in modern times) for the story of 'The Cradock Four'.
It is one of the Cape's chief centres of the wool industry.
We took an interest in Schreiner House where the author of The Story of an African Farm lived as a young girl. The house, which is located at 9 Cross Street and is a satellite of the National English Literary Museum, contains a modern set of exhibitions portraying the life of Olive Schreiner.
Cradock had a name change in 2022. It has officially been renamed Nxuba.
