Eshowe Unterkünfte
About 25 kilometres inland from the coastal town of Mtunzini, you’ll come across the inland market town of Eshowe. The town lies north east of Durban and happens to be the oldest one of European settlement in Zululand. It has a long varied history and some interesting attractions to draw in the visitor.
KwaZulu Natal’s coastal climate tends to be subtropical – hot and humid, and for that reason alone many like to escape inland to Eshowe where the temperatures are decidedly less sticky. It has been a favoured spot in the area for Zulu Kings, Norwegian missionaries and other settlers, all of whom saw some attraction in the place. It was also subject to a siege during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
After these incarnations, Eshowe became the capital of Zululand in 1887, due to both the climate and its position, and was later declared a town in 1891. Since then it has grown, as towns are wont to do, and now boasts several schools, 2 shopping centres and a hospital. If you are visiting for leisure though, you will be much more interested in Dhlinza Forest.
The indigenous forest covers just over 4 square kilometres and is perched on the hills behind the town. It is home to numerous bird species as well as small animals like vervet monkeys, duiker, bushbuck and wild boar. It also boasts an impressive aerial walkway as well as other walks and trails.
The town itself is part of the official Battlefields Route and also has a modest museum displaying Zulu baskets, pottery and hand crafts.
