Fish River Canyon Unterkünfte
The Fish River Canyon is located in the southern part of Namibia and is easily accessible from South Africa. Taking a leisurely road trip up South Africa’s Cape Namibia Route (officially known as the N7) from Cape Town means you can arrive at this breath-taking attraction within 2 days.
The canyon is widely acknowledged as Namibia’s second most popular tourist attraction, and for good reason! The canyon is often touted as the second largest in the entire world. Its length covers 160 kilometres while its breadth is 27 kilometres, and the canyon is 550 metres deep at its deepest point.
The canyon is a fascinating place to visit and is not only starkly beautiful but also provides a glimpse into the region’s geographical history. For the most part, the landscape is red, rocky and dry. At certain points upstream there are horizontal dolomite strata which were formed 650 million years ago! Many of the plants and animals which survive in the area have evolved over millennia.
The canyon was formed (literally) ages ago by the Fish River’s motion as the water cut into the surrounding rocks. Today it’s hard to believe that the intermittent river is capable of carving such a deep gorge into the landscape! For most parts of the year, the river is largely dry with only a few pools of water. The rocks and sand are occasionally interrupted by small, hardy, drought-resistant succulents and the odd lizard, snake or bird.
Some parts of the Fish River Canyon near Hobas and Ais Ais hot springs are public areas while much of the property along the rest of the canyon is constituted by private lodges.
If you are looking for a breath-taking natural spectacle in Africa, the Fish River Canyon should definitely be on your radar!

Fish River Canyon
Fish River Canyon, for being a highlight of Namibia was quite pathetic. The building was terribly run-down, the restaurant was in average condition, given COVID, understandable. The staff were phenomenal, as we had arrived on regional voting day which is a public holiday, still the chef cooked us an amazing steak and the host was great too. Great staff and people, unfortunately having to work in run-down buildings and still be expected to generate income for NWR.
