The suburb of Florida Hills is situated within the Greater Johannesburg Metropolis in the province of Gauteng. You’ll find it in a region known as the West Rand, and more specifically in Roodepoort, once its own municipality. Florida Hills is situated in the east of Roodepoort and the N1 Western Bypass road passes on its eastern boundary. It is therefore not only a pretty suburb, but a well-connected one too.
Florida Hills itself is a lovely pocket of Johannesburg, especially when it comes to aesthetics. By Highveld standards, which usually constitutes yellow savannah grassland, Florida Hills is decidedly green, with jacaranda trees and greenbelts appearing at regular intervals. In contrast there are little hills which are red and rocky and altogether more typical of the region. The gentle hills making up the suburb also add interest as the large houses are situated at different altitudes.
Florida Hills, has few attractions in its own right, but given its status as a residential suburb, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Instead it is a pretty and relaxing location to return to after exploring the wider reaches of Johannesburg and some of its important neighbourhoods, which include Sandton, the CBD and Soweto – all of which can be accessed via the N1 bypass.
For attractions close by, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is a gem in the city and situated in Roodepoort. With extensive lawns and various clusters of vegetation types, it is a peaceful escape from the city buzz and extraordinarily popular spot among weekend picnickers. The small wildlife just adds to the fun. For golfers, the Roodepoort Country Club may be worth a visit.
