Gansbaai is a small fishing village situated 2 hours’ drive from Cape Town and a hop, skip and a jump from Hermanus, home of the eco-friendly Hermanus Whale Festival. Gansbaai itself is one of a group of towns (De Kelders and Stanford are the other two) situated on the magnificent Walker Bay coastline and accommodation in Gansbaai and the surrounding villages offers one the chance to explore this exciting pocket of South Africa.

The Walker Bay region is a nature enthusiast’s dream-come-true, especially if marine bio-diversity gets you ticking. Every July to September the bay welcomes pods of Southern Right whales which come to mate and raise their young calves. The cliffs and hills surrounding Gansbaai offer some of the best land-based positions to observe them from, in the world! If the whales pique your interest, the region offers many alternative activities for exploring marine life too.

Gansbaai is known for its shark-cave diving, as throngs of Great Whites inhabit the waters. There are a number of licensed boats which leave each morning, equipped not only with cages and equipment, but also a qualified marine-biologist-cum-guide who will educate you as to the conservation issues facing the area. Furthermore, Dyer Island, a short boat-trip away, plays home to a large colony of Cape Fur Seals as well as a group of endangered African Penguins (known locally as Jack-ass penguins for their distinctive donkey bray). 

For those less-enamoured by the ocean, the Walker Bay region offers a wide variety of endemic fauna. A variety of walks and hikes in the area wind their way through the Overberg mountains, offering glimpses of plant species found nowhere else but this unique strip of coastline. Alternatively you could visit the lighthouse in Danger Bay or simply veg out in your Gansbaai accommodation, soaking in the relaxed vibes of small-town life.
