Hermanus Whale Festival 2017
The Hermanus Whale Festival is celebrating its 26th year as the only enviro-arts festival to exist in South Africa. The aim of the event is to “put the creatures of the deep on stage and under the spotlight alongside top performers and musicians' from 29 September - 1 October 2017.
Hermanus, known as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, plays host to thousands of visitors who flock to the seaside town to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watching the whales while revelling in live music performances. While the star performers are the southern right whales, back on land festival-goers can enjoy the tunes of top-notch South African musicians and nibble on some gourmet grub.
Every July, Southern Right whales pull into the bay to breed in the protected waters, mating, birthing and raising their calves until mature enough to take to the open seas around December. The Whales are always the star performers at the festival and will be joined on land by great food, quality crafters, great sport events, kids entertainment, street parades, an ECO-marine tent, the Two Oceans Wine Music stage with over 30 artists performing over the festival.
Hermanus, perched on the cliffs above Walker Bay, packs a lot of punch. With wineries, restaurants and adventure activities galore, the old cliché, ‘something for everyone’, certainly holds true.
