Gariep Dam Unterkünfte
Located just off the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town, around the country’s largest dam with the same name, Gariep Dam is a hidden rural gem that holds the title of the youngest town in South Africa.
Due to its convenient position and the excellent road network that connects the town to the Eastern Cape, North and South Namibia and Botswana, many motorists choose to break up a long journey by staying at one of Gariep Dam’s lovely guesthouses for the night.
Surrounded by unsullied nature, the town offers visitors tranquillity, nature, good amenities and an abundance of outdoor activities. In fact, Gariep Dam was voted tourist town of the year in 2010.
The Gariep Dam Nature Reserve, opened in 1972, is a key attraction of the town. It is officially the Free State's largest nature reserve at around 38 000ha and is popular with anglers and boating enthusiasts. The reserve also accommodates the largest population of Springbok in any reserve in the country, and features Cape Mountain Zebra, Klipspringer, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest and Ostrich.
While undeniably quiet and tranquil, Gariep Dam is not short of leisure pursuits to keep active visitors busy. At the Dam itself, you can enjoy all kinds of water-sports, from jet-skiing to canoeing, wind-surfing and sailing. Fishing is of course another fixture, and the more serious fishing fanatics can take part in the Dam's annual fishing competition - The South African International Light Tackle Boat International Championship.
Other outdoor activities to take part in include Game viewing, Bird watching, Bowls, Tennis and Nature hikes. With so much to keep you busy, you could spend a good few days in Gariep Dam - settle in at one of the various self-catering establishments available and make it your home away from home.

Lovely place to stop over in. We visited the nature reserve which was a lovely drive once in the reserve. The dam and dam wall is very impressive - wish we had managed to organize a tour.

Gariep Dam is an amazing display of excellent engineering, planning and execution of a water project. Not only is the dam functional, it is extremely beautiful and vast. We feel blessed and privileged to have been able to visit Gariep dam, especially this year, March 2022, with the water overflowing at the dam wall. What a spectacular sight to behold.
