Gauteng, South Africa’s smallest province, packs a lot of punch. It is the country’s commercial capital and perhaps as a result of this, it is also South Africa’s most population-dense region. The name is a derivative of the Sesotho word meaning ‘place of gold’, a reference to Gauteng’s gold-rush days in the 1880’s. Close to both Pretoria and Johannesburg is the world renowned Cradle of Human Kind and the Sterkfontein Caves. This is an archaeological site of international importance where fossils of over 3 million years old were discovered. Close to both Pretoria and Johannesburg is the delightful little town of Cullinan, a throwback from the diamond mining days.
