Florida Verblyf
Florida, unlike its more famous USA location, is situated in the Roodepoort area of Johannesburg, on Gauteng’s West Rand.
Florida has often been described as a world away from Johannesburg even though it technically falls within the limits of Greater Johannesburg. Unlike the centre of Johannesburg which is built up and decidedly lacking in space and greenery, Florida is quiet with large properties and loads of space! It is convenient too because amenities are much more concentrated. Shops, restaurants and other things are all quite close to each other.
A lovely site in Florida is the Florida Lake, a well-loved local hang out. It is common to see families picnicking on its banks and walking dogs too. If you want to get the local experience, you might consider doing the same, especially since the warm, sunny climate in the area is especially conducive to outdoor activities. You can pack a basket, find a spot under the trees and watch the waterfowl paddle about.
At the lake itself are various attractions. For example, there is an adventure park for children, a putt-putt golf course and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The lake is also great for canoeing and sailing and has braaing facilities too. It is a really family-friendly destination and is a wonderful place to spend time over the weekend.
It is clear that Florida has come a long way since the days of being Vogelstruisfontein farm. It was initially established as a mining town but today there are few reminders of this time. Instead there is one of the best libraries in Johannesburg and a strip of dealers specialising in antique furniture on Goldman Street.
