Gonubie Unterkünfte
Gonubie is a small town in the Eastern Cape, located roughly 8 kilometres north east of the city of East London. It forms part of the same municipality though as East London, King Williams Town and Bhisho. This is the Buffalo City Municipality.
The town, which boasts a population of less than 9000, gets its name from Gqunube River (the official Xhosa name for the river). Gonubie lies at the mouth of this river, meaning that it boasts a river estuary and a beach in one convenient location.
Gonubie is an extremely popular haunt for East London locals and tourists alike. Its popularity has led to large amounts of development in the little town and it’s currently a hot-spot for property investors too. There are good reasons for this.
The town lies on the southern coast of South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. This means that the beach at Gonubie is a great swimming spot because the water temperatures are so temperate. This combined with the soft sand makes for a lovely day out at the beach. Furthermore, the Gonubie Estuary is a good place to while away a couple of hours exploring its inhabitants at low tide. These include numerous bird species, water snails and little crabs, often hidden inside their shells.
Just off the beach, Gonubie Point is a popular surfing spot and the area also boasts a tidal pool to explore when the estuary loses its sparkle. Finally there is a boardwalk, designed to protect the beautiful coastal dune system, which simultaneously provides a scenic walk for those wishing to experience the peaceful beauty of Gonubie.
