Gordon's Bay Logement - 3

Nestled at the foot of Sir Lowry’s Pass, just 40 minutes from Cape Town, lies the quirky little beach town of Gordon’s Bay. You can never go wrong with a seaside town, and Gordon’s Bay is  one of the most breath-taking you’ll encounter.

The centre of town is full of interesting second-hand book stores and antiquated ice-cream parlours, while the beach scene is pretty universal. Long, flat, full of people if the weather’s right and lined with hawkers selling cheap sunglasses and beach balls. Bikini Beach is Gordon’s Bay’s main beach and has blue flag status. It is an excellent swimming beach, with magnificent views over False Bay.

Slightly further afield, things are a little different. For starters, the Stellenbosch wine route is 10 minutes outside of town and if you head out along the coastal road, you will encounter one of the most scenic drives in South Africa. At the end of this road there are a number of small holiday settlements which make nice day-outings for fish ‘n chips stops (for example), and the Harold Porter Botanical Garden outside Betty’s Bay is a lovely tranquil spot for a stroll and a picnic. This area also has numerous scenic hikes, a favourite being the trail to Crystal Pools, where hikers are rewarded with deep, refreshing rock pools and ‘jumping’ rocks to provide a little adrenaline rush.

If you’d prefer not to drive much during your stay in Gordon’s Bay, regular sunset cruises leave from the harbour, freeing your hands and concentration to hold onto a Champagne flute while admiring the view. This bay is also one of the breeding grounds for the endangered Southern Right whales who frequent it from July to September - if you are staying on the mountainside, you’ll be able to watch the whales frolicking without even leaving home.
