Kuils River, formerly known as ‘De Cylen’, was established as a cattle fold for the Dutch East India Company in the 1600s, before being converted into a staging post en route to Stellenbosch. Today, it exists as a partially-commercialised suburb where big manufacturers such as Coca-Cola and Nampak, co-exist with original farmsteads and small holdings. While these and other industrial ventures sustain the local economy, farming is still a popular pastime and also helps to financially sustain the area.

Visitors feel at home in Kuils River not just for its tranquil setting, but because of the camaraderie found amongst the locals. It is a community-driven suburb where locals are familiar with their neighbours and greet holidaymakers in a warm and friendly fashion.

The suburb  still has a cow crossing in which passers-by are expected to stop for herds of cattle looking to cross. While waiting for these giant beasts to traipse across the road is time- consuming, it encourages you to embrace the slow-paced, easy going lifestyle of Kuils River.

Being the gateway to several wine routes, wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs will be familiar with the suburb. Locals are especially proud of Zevenwacht Wine Estate, a winery that lies along the Stellenbosch route and just above Kuils River. This estate is housed on a sprawling farm with scenic views of the Bottelary Hills and surrounds. If you’re looking for a day filled with wine and the sunshine, start your adventure in Kuils River before visiting the 106 cellars found along the Stellenbosch wine route. Following a booze-fuelled day, a night stay’s at the various Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses in the area will remedy a possible hangover and provide you with all the comfort you need. 

Visitors looking to be entertained or engage in retail therapy can do so at the Willowbridge Lifestyle Centre or GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World – both of which are in close proximity to the suburb. A visit to Willowbridge Lifestyle Centre is a unique open-aired shopping experience. Here you’ll be able to meander around boutique stores and antique shops or enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants. For entertainment that is geared toward the entire family, a visit to GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World will provide you with endless hours of fun – from gambling for the adults to ice skating and ten-pin bowling for the children.
