Greytown Accommodatie
The little town of Greytown is situated in the heart of the KwaZulu Natal province. It is often considered the gateway settlement to many of KwaZulu Natal’s popular tourism destinations such as the Midlands, the Drakensberg and the Battlefields. This is thanks to its close proximity to each of them. These attractions aside, there are plenty of activities to take part in, right on Greytown’s doorstep.
The town lies in a very fertile region of the province and there are a number of different vegetation types in the surrounding areas. These include forest, thornveld, grasslands and dams, which provide varying landscapes to explore and are home to numerous varieties of birds and other animals. Lake Methley for example, is a scenic spot humming with birds. It is also a popular destination for water sport enthusiasts and those who enjoy fishing.
Hiking is a great activity in the area too, with the most-famous trail being the Blinkwater trail, a 100 kilometre network of paths, which include 4 overnight huts. This is just one of many options though.
Another thing to love about Greytown is its proximity to game reserves, the Mhlopeni Nature Reserve being one. Apart from being home to numerous fascinating species, including rare butterflies and a number of red data species (species considered highly endangered), there are a number of archaeological sites within the reserve too. One such site consists of a stone crucible used for smelting brass, which predates colonialism!
The Greytown Museum is also a good place to check out if you are interested in the area’s history. It boasts displays covering Zulu culture, the famous Bambatha Rebellion, a blacksmith’s forge and relics from the Anglo Boer War.
