Hermanus, situated in the beautiful Overberg region, offers unequalled scenic magnificence, modern infrastructure, trendy shops and a myriad of options for the ultimate holiday adventure. At just one and a half hours drive from Cape Town, it comes as no surprise that Hermanus has grown in popularity as a holiday destination over the last decade amongst locals and tourists alike.
Hermanus boasts the reputation of being the top land-based place in the world for whale-watching. From June through to December, Southern Right whales visit Walker Bay and can be seen from boat, an aircraft or the shore. Hermanus is also home to the world’s only Whale Crier who blows his kelp horn when whales are spotted along the central sea route. The annual Whale Festival has now become a feature on the town’s calendar.
Hermanus is a cosmopolitan town but has kept to its roots by retaining characteristics of its historical fisherman’s village heritage. An interesting selection of craft markets sell a range of attractive merchandise, whilst a local marimba band adds to the lively atmosphere. The old harbour, with its restored fishing boats, paints a pleasingly nostalgic picture of times past.
Shark cage diving offers an exciting fix of adrenaline for adventure lovers whilst kayaking trips on the sea or lagoon can be booked for the more passive thrill seekers. Fernkloof Nature Reserve presents a variety of stunning walks among the fynbos. Whether you choose to spend a day at Sandbaai or Grotto Beach or playing a round of golf at the Hermanus Golf Club, there is something for everyone.
