Hogsback Verblyf
Perched high in the Amathole Mountain Range, the tiny village of Hogsback is most famous for providing the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The town is located in the Eastern Cape, a short drive from the city of East London.
Named after the three distinctive flat top mountains and their likeness to the wispy backs of wild hogs, the town boasts incredible views, a bulging creative community and endless mountainous adventures. All good reasons to book Hogsback accommodation.
Tiny Hogsback overlooks the Tyume Valley and is surrounded by the mountains and all their indigenous, afro-montane forest glory. This forest is home to numerous bird species as well as samango monkeys. Cape Parrots (which are said to number no more than 300 worldwide) are the jewel in Hogsback’s natural heritage crown.
Many of Hogsback’s activities centre around the mountains and a visit to Hogsback would not be complete without a hike to one of the famous waterfalls. Madonna and Child, 39 Steps and the Kettle Spout are all waterfalls worth a visit. Not only are they a sight to behold, but many of the waterfalls offer a cool respite from the summer heat – especially satisfying after a hike!
Hogsback is an attractive destination for outdoor lovers, especially those with an affinity for mountains. Apart from the array of hiking trails, there are numerous bolted climbing routes in the area, some of them at the waterfalls themselves. Horse-riding in and around Hogsback is exceptionally rewarding as the height gives one access to unparalleled vistas.
Hogsback is an interesting place to visit too for the alternative community which inhabits it. Throughout the town you will find little artist’s studios, signs for holistic healing and a number of eco-lodges.
