This small city in southern Mozambique has recently become very popular with tourists, especially those interested in scuba diving. It is also renowned for its old architecture and proximity to some of Mozambique’s most impressive attractions.
Inhambane is named after the bay of the same name, on which the city lies. There is a small inlet where the Matamba River flows, and the inlet with its natural sandbanks on either side creates a convenient harbour, the reason for which the city was established by the Portuguese in the first place.
It is one of the oldest settlements on the East Coast of Mozambique and grew quickly into a major ivory and slave trading post. Shortly after it was established, it became the first Jesuit mission to East Africa.
These days Inhambane is renowned and loved for its crumbling colonial architecture and its harbour full of traditional dhow boats. Climbing the rickety ladder up to the spire of the 170 year old Catholic church, Our Lady Conception, reveals a stunning panoramic view of the city and the bay. The Mercado Central also provides a unique shopping experience where you can buy anything from prawns and spices to cashew nuts and vegetables.
A few kilometres away are the idyllic beaches of Tofo and Barra. Tofo in particular is a world famous diving site, known as the whale shark capital of the world. Also to be seen there are giant manta rays and turtles. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a major tourist attraction too, and dhows from the Inhambane harbour regularly ferry visitors across to the islands.
If you are visiting Mozambique by road from South Africa, Inhambane should definitely be on your itinerary as it really is a gateway to some of Mozambique’s most magical marine offerings, and is an interesting little city in its own right.
