Irene Accommodatie
Irene is a small settlement south of Pretoria in Gauteng. Officially it lies within Centurion, a small town which itself has been incorporated into the larger municipality of Pretoria, or the City of Tshwane, as it’s also known.
Irene is the result of various reincarnations of the farm Doornkloof. In 1889, two thirds of the original Doornkloof farm was purchased by AH Nellmapius, who renamed his section Irene Estate, after his daughter. Later in 1895 Bertie van der Byl bought the Irene Estate and the area was finally proclaimed a township in 1902. In 1908, Jan Smuts bought the remaining third of Doornkloof and built a beautiful family home on the property. This home is still standing, along with its well-kept, flower-full garden.
Irene, pronounced /I-REE-nee/, is today a picturesque little town, favoured by visitors for its gorgeous surroundings, old-school charm and relaxed ambience, not to mention its convenience factor, being located within an easy drive of both Pretoria and Johannesburg – two of the busiest cities in South Africa.
Irene, despite its pretty appearance, has a history which is not as rosy as the current day settlement seems. During the days of the Boer War (also known as the South African War), Irene was used by the British as a concentration camp where the Boers’ (Afrikaners’) wives and children were taken. To honour these innocent victims of war, there is a memorial at the Irene Concentration Camp Cemetery.
On a happier note, the delightful Irene Village Market takes place on the second Saturday of the month in the gardens of Smuts’ House. It is a family-friendly affair and a must-do if you are visiting Johannesburg, Pretoria or staying in Irene itself.
