Set in the heart of the Camdeboo plains, there is no denying that Jansenville is surrounded by Karoo beauty at its best. The town is situated in the Cacadu region of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, a breath-taking spot surrounded by paradise – especially true if you are a lover of the great outdoors.

Jansenville is 87 kilometres south of Graaff Reinet, on the banks of the Sundays River. Its location means that it is very fertile, by the Karoo’s generally semi-arid standards, a fact which drew settlers to the area in the first place. The region was initially farmed thanks to the fertile soils and sufficient water supplies, and as is often the case, a small farming community developed from there.

The first ‘anchor’ for the region was the beautiful Dutch Reformed Church, which as in many areas across South Africa, acted as the cement which initially held the community together. Like Ermelo in Mpumalanga, and numerous other small towns in South Africa, a settlement soon followed the construction of the church. In Jansenville’s case, the town was established in 1855 and recognised as a municipality for the first time in 1881.

The town is surrounded by beautiful open plains dotted with shrubs and succulents and characterised in the minds of many by the spectacular array of stars which blanket the sky at night. The area is also rich in game farms with numerous reserves (the most famous of which being the Addo Elephant National Park) and hunting concessions being found within close proximity. There are also numerous scenic passes nearby and just north of town is an old fort which was utilised during the Anglo-Boer War.

Jansenville also has many pretty buildings, and the Dutch Reformed Church, built in a Basilica style of local stone, is a recognised heritage site.
