Jeffreys Bay started out as small, sleepy fishing village which attracted a small surfing community in the 1960’s. Since then it has grown into a rapidly expanding urban area. However, despite its growth, Jeffreys Bay culture is still centred around the beach and even the most budget accommodation options in Jeffreys Bay are almost guaranteed to have an ocean view.
Situated in the Eastern Cape, an hour from Port Elizabeth, JBay (as it’s affectionately known) is easily accessible. It lies just off the N2 highway which connects Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. It also happens to be the gateway to the famous Garden Route, a scenic coastal route renowned among tourists and locals alike.
Jeffreys Bay is most famous for its incredible surf spots and surfers from all over the world are its most loyal visitors, frequenting the many backpackers around town. In fact, JBay is said to be one of the 5 most famous surf spots in the world and considered to have the best right hand point break of any other surf spot. Annually, Jeffreys Bay hosts the Jeffereys Bay Winter Festival which attracts surfers as well as spectators from around the world.
For non-surfers, Jeffreys Bay's Dolphin Beach is blue flag certified, meaning the beach is not only safe for swimming and manned by life-guards, but it is exceptionally clean and the environment is looked after. Part of that environment includes seashells, something this stretch of coast is somewhat famous for. A multitude of perfectly formed seashells are to be found on the coastline and JBay is so proud of this fact that they host an annual seashell festival to celebrate it! If you’re not in town you can visit the Shell Museum which is a beautiful showcase of shells as well as interesting ways they’ve been put to use.
There are also a number of small nature reserves around JBay which offer myriad bird species and small game such as buck and porcupine. Spending a day on one of the hiking trails is one well spent.
Jeffreys Bay is a great holiday destination for those of you just wishing to kick back with a beer and enjoy the sound of the waves. If you are staying for awhile, you’d do well to stay at one of the self-catering establishments in town and make a home away from home. In season you will more than likely be able to watch the visiting Southern Right whales from your balcony. There are few places more relaxing than JBay.
