St Francis Bay Verblyf
St Francis Bay is an idyllic seaside town on the Sunshine Coast of South Africa. It lies in the Kouga region of the Eastern Cape and is located one hour from Port Elizabeth. It is also considered the eastern gateway to the famous Garden Route.
St Francis Bay, the town, lies on a bay which shares the exact same name. It was in 1575 when Portuguese soldiers initially came across the beautiful, protected bay. They named it St Frances after the patron saint of sailors. It was only in 1954 however, when any development started to take place. This development occurred thanks to the foresight of Leighton Hulett. The town was originally developed with a reasonably strict architectural code – white walls and thatched roofs – which is a style which still dominates today.
St Francis Bay is a lovely relaxed little town and attracts local and international settlers as well as a variety of holiday makers from various corners of the globe. It has a wide, sandy stretch of beach and on the eastern side of town you’ll find the Kromme River estuary. These two assets provide suitable conditions for plenty of outdoor activities.
Apart from just relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun, you can also try fishing and all manner of surfing from body boarding and kite surfing to wind surfing. The river is navigable for 10 kilometres upstream and makes a nice canoe trip.
St Francis Bay also boasts 2 golf courses and there are numerous nature reserves nearby. The reserves are well worth visiting thanks to the unique coastal vegetation of the Kouga region, including wild flowers and fynbos.
