Kaapstad Verblyf - 41

Cape Town has a history stretching back to the early 1650’s when Jan van Riebeek arrived and set up the first European outpost in South Africa at the Cape of Good Hope. Soon the city outgrew its hub at the Castle of Good Hope and has been growing and evolving ever since.

Today Cape Town is one of the most culturally diverse and strikingly scenic cities in the world. The city can be roughly divided into 8 sections, each with its own character. This mixture of neighbourhoods ensures that where accommodation is concerned, there is something for everyone.

The city centre is known as the city bowl, for being encircled on three sides by the famous Table Mountain, now a World Heritage Site. This flat-topped mountain is unique in its shape and provides one of the most memorable backdrops of any city anywhere. A visit to Cape Town would not be complete without a hike or cable car ride up to the top, from where you can look out over the city below, the bay and Robben Island and see as far as the mountain ranges which form the boundary of the Cape Winelands.

The city centre is where most of Cape Town’s creative energy is concentrated, and milling around areas like Kloof and Bree Street will have you rubbing shoulders with the creative elite as well as coming face to face with some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. To the west, the Atlantic Seaboard, which includes suburbs like Sea Point and Greenpoint, puts you in sight of the vast Atlantic Ocean and the promenade makes a great place for an early morning jog or stroll.

Further south, the little fishing villages of Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town are backed by the spine of the mountain and have a distinctly bohemian air about them. Little coffee shops and seaside restaurants are interspersed with little art galleries and shops selling gypsy-like wares.

Travelling northwards, the suburbs on the west coast have a more arid landscape which comes with long stretches of sandy beach.

Cape Town is full of things to do and places to see, so make sure you give yourself enough time to experience it all!
