Rondebosch Verblyf

Rondebosch is an affluent in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Its name is derived from the ronde doorn bosje, a section of thorn bush planted in a circle formation on the banks of the Liesbeek River (then the Amstel River). This area is where the first experimental crops were grown after the Dutch’s arrival at the Cape in 1652. As you can tell, Rondebosch has a long history, but there are few physical remains of it.

Historical sites and buildings are limited to the public library, which is housed in the old Rondebosch town hall, St Paul’s church, a stone structure just down the road, the steel fountain at the bottom of the Belmont Bridge (the only railway crossing in Rondebosch) and Simon van der Stel’s house, which is part of the Rustenburg Girls’ school.

Speaking of schools, Rondebosch is known for its high density of excellent schools, all with long histories and entrenched traditions. The suburb is also remarkably close to the University of Cape Town, another fine educational institution. All this means that Rondebosch is a highly desirable neighbourhood for families and students with the leafy areas off the main road showcasing the large homes of families, complete with dogs, and the areas closer to the main road being lined with take-away restaurants, text book shops and university residences.

Rondebosch is a welcoming area with many open spaces including Keurboom Park and the Rondebosch Common, a small environementally protected area home to insects, snakes, mice and birds of prey. Next to the common is the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, often touted as the best paediatric hospital in Africa.
