Kei Mouth is an idyllic little holiday town on the coast in the Eastern Cape, a province in South Africa. It can be reached in under an hour from East London, and marks the start of the Transkei, the traditional land of the Xhosa people, and the famous Wild Coast.
Kei Mouth is named after the mighty Kei River, and as the name implies, the settlement is situated at the point where the river meets the Indian Ocean. It is a favourite holiday destination, especially among local travellers as the combination of the impressive setting and multiple activities on offer make it difficult not to fall in love with the place.
The town is small and its amenities are simple so it is especially enjoyed by those with a sense of adventure, who aren’t put off by the rustic nature of the place. Most of the activities available involve getting out and active – which poses no issue as usually when people see the surroundings they are gagging to get out and explore.
Kei Mouth represents the southern part of the Wild Coast, a rugged green coast defined by its hills and indigenous vegetation which is sporadically interrupted by plunging gorges. Evidence of this landscape can be seen around Kei Mouth, especially where the hills and waves are concerned.
Kei Mouth is a great surf spot and also boasts a ski-boat launch site. Horse-riding and mountain biking along the coast around Kei Mouth is endlessly rewarding, as is doing one of the many coastal hikes, which can, by arrangement, see you visiting local Xhosa homes.
One of the most famous attractions at Kei Mouth is the ‘Pont’ – the pontoon river ferry which transports cars, people and livestock across the river. It is a site to behold and an experience to be had, especially since it is one of only 2 left in South Africa.
