South Africa is a place of many wonders but if you really want to be enthralled, the Karoo is a great place to start.  The word Karoo is said to be a Khoi San word denoting a semi-arid region of the country. The Klein Karoo is a sub-region of the entire area. It is a world of stunning landscapes, open starry skies, excellent meat and exceptional hospitality.

The Klein Karoo (Afrikaans for Little Karoo) refers to the southerly (and smaller) region of the Nama Karoo, which is the part of the Karoo which receives winter rainfall. It lies in an enclosed valley with a flat floor stretching out for kilometres. Its northern boundary is the Swartberg mountain range, while to the south you will find the Langeberg and Outeniqua ranges.

These mountain ranges not only provide a scenic backdrop, but also act as a playground to active types who enjoy pursuits such as hiking or mountain biking. The boundary lines to the west and east of the Klein Karoo are not as well defined, although the quaint town of Barrydale, with its coffee shops, artists and small town vibe is considered the western limit, while the equally endearing town of Uniondale is widely accepted as the mark of the Klein Karoo’s eastern boundary.

While the flat, open landscape is definitely a draw card for many, the Klein Karoo is also home to numerous small towns besides Barrydale and Uniondale. Oudtshoorn is perhaps the most significant. This town is at the heart of the Karoo’s ostrich industry and just outside town you can visit ostrich farms where you can buy feathers and egg shells and ride an ostrich too. The Cango Caves are also an incredible site nearby.

Ladismith and De Rust are also beautiful towns which offer plenty to the visitor, while yet another option is Calitzdorp. Overall, the Klein Karoo is a stunning part of South Africa and one you don’t want to miss!
