Klerksdorp is a small city in the North West province of South Africa. It lies on the N12 national road which connects Johannesburg to other interior towns and cities like Klerksdorp itself, Potchefstroom, Bloemhof and eventually George, in the Western Cape. This route is known by the tourism board as the Treasure Route, and while not immediately obvious, there are some interesting tourist gems to be found in the area.
Klerksdorp was initially a mining town and this industry as well as agriculture, keep the city’s economy ticking over. Given its substantial size, whether you visit for business or pleasure, you will find a hotel or lodge in Klerksdorp to suit your needs.
The town was established in 1837 when Voortrekkers settled in the area. When gold was discovered in 1886 there was a rush of people to the town and the population grew, along with the town’s infrastructure. Over the years though the driving force behind the town’s economy changed and while gold is still mined in the area, a large portion of Klerksdorp’s revenue comes from farming pursuits, particularly maize, sorghum, groundnuts and sunflowers. Sussex cattle are also reared in the area.
Where tourism is concerned, some attractions include the Klerksdorp Museum, housed in the original Klerksdorp Prison, the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside of town and home to 150 bird species and 30 game species, the Goudkoppie Hill and intriguing rock art engravings on the Bosworth farm. The Klerksdorp dam is a lovely place to picnic and while away an afternoon.
The Klerksdorp area is semi-arid and experiences a small amount of summer rainfall, when it is also extremely hot. Winter tends to be cool and dry. While you may have little control if it’s a business trip, if you are travelling down the N12 Treasure Route for pleasure, it is best to stay in Klerksdorp in the inbetween seasons, that is, March to May or September to November.
Enjoy your stay in Klerksdorp!
