Lichtenburg Logement
The town of Lichtenburg is situated in the North West province and boasts a long history of diamond mining. Despite lying in a decidedly arid part of South Africa, it is surprisingly green and lush (a welcome oasis some say) and makes a pleasant place to visit. There is also plenty to see and do in the town and its surrounding areas.
The Lichtenburg of today has 2 main economic activities, namely cement, with 3 major producers within an 80 kilometre radius, and maize, unsurprising being at the heart of the maize triangle, South Africa’s main maize-growing area. However, in days gone by, diamonds were very much the driving force, and in fact the town owes its existence to these stones.
It was officially established in 1873 and named Lichtenburg (Town of Light) by the president of the then-Transvaal, Thomas Francois Burgers. In 1926 Jacobus Voorendyk discovered a diamond on his family’s farm, a discovery which sparked a diamond rush attracting 100s of 1000s of people which lasted for a decade.
While the diamond rush is no longer in full swing, there are many reminders of this influential period throughout town. The Lichtenburg Diggings Museum for example focuses on the alluvial diamond diggings in the decade after the initial discovery, while there are also numerous monuments to influential ‘diamond folk’ throughout the town. Historical buildings are also a feature of the town.
Burning Vlei is a unique part of Lichtenburg which is home to 2 dams – used for water sports, as well as a 9-hole golf course. About 40 kilometres from town is Wondergat, the country’s deepest sink-hole and arguably its top inland diving destination.
