Kokstad Accommodatie
The town of Kokstad is situated in the KwaZulu Natal Province but close to the Eastern Cape border. It is north west of seaside town of Port Edward and lies just off the N2 highway. The town, which is home to just over 50 000 people, has a gorgeous setting and offers myriad outdoor experiences as well as an interesting history.
The town lies on the lower slopes of the famous Drakensberg Mountains, and has an altitude of 1302 metres. The main economic activity in the area is dairy farming, and the Kokstad region is especially well-known for its cheeses. A few years ago Kokstad came into the limelight for another reason when Oprah Winfrey’s philanthropic organisation, known as Oprah’s Angel Network, built a school in one of the town’s poorer townships.
Going much further back in the town’s history, the Kokstad Museum is housed in a national monument and preserves the history of the Griqua people in the area. The name Kokstad means ‘Kok town’ in Afrikaans and comes from the Griqua leader Adam Kok III. Kok and his group settled in the spot in 1863, after confrontations with the Boers and the British in the interior of the country. Ironically Adam Kok died just a few days after establishing the town and there is a monument to the leader outside the police station in town.
Heading out of town, the presence of the imposing Drakensberg will be felt even more, without the distractions of town life, and there are a number of great locations to visit where you can really soak up the scenery. For example, the Mountain Lake Nature Reserve, which has over 200 bird species and numerous walking trails to explore, and the Crystal Spring Dam, where you can practise various water sports including angling.
