Kosi Bay Verblyf
Kosi Bay is a haven in the far north of KwaZulu Natal. It refers to a region of Maputaland where the Kosi River has its estuary, just 2 kilometres from the Mozambique border. Kosi Bay knocks the socks off anyone who stays there due to the incredible estuarine eco-system and cultural wealth to be found there.
Kosi Bay consists of 4 interlinked lakes, which form part of the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park - a Unesco World Heritage site. Within the system of lakes you will find exotic species galore from hippos, crocodiles and aggressive bull sharks (also known as Zambezi sharks) to birds like the Palmnut vulture, rare Pel's fishing owl and numerous kingfisher species.
As for flora, Kosi Bay is renowned as the only place on earth where 5 species of mangrove trees live side by side. The raffia palm trees found in the Kosi Bay area are also worth noting.
The beaches along the Kosi Bay coastline are the definition of pristine - long, white and untouched due to the necessity of a 4x4 vehicle to reach them. If you visit Kosi Bay in the right season (November to March) you stand the chance of witnessing the Leatherback turtle hatchlings making their way to the sea for the first time. Leatherbacks are a unique species of turtle in that they don't have a shell. Instead a thick, leathery skin protects them. The coast at Kosi Bay is one of the few places you can get a glimpse of these special animals. Loggerhead turtles also nest on the beaches here, giving guests a two-for-one deal.
It's evident that there are many things to be enjoyed when staying in Kosi Bay, but how do you go about enjoying them? Well, the water in the estuary is so clear that it is often referred to as 'the aquarium'. Snorkelling is therefore a popular activity. Diving off the coast is also extremely rewarding as is moseying along the Kosi Bay slack-packing trail.
If you are going to be in Kosi Bay, an absolute must is to take a boat trip through the estuaries to get a good look at the lakes. Apart from fauna and flora spotting, you will also get a glimpse of the traditional fish kraals - an old fishing method whereby fish are trapped in the 'kraal' when they enter the estuary with the tides. These fishing devices get passed down the generations and are monitored by local tribal authorities.
Kosi Bay is a paradise no matter which way you look at it. The closest settlement is the town of Mangusi so staying in Kosi Bay will really make you feel you are one with nature. Whether you stay in one of the many local lodges or go camping instead, this is a dream holiday destination.
