Kroonstad Accommodatie
The small city of Kroonstad is located in the Free State province of South Africa. It lies almost halfway between Johannesburg (in Gauteng) and Bloemfontein, making it a roughly two hour drive from either destination. It is currently the 3rd biggest city in the Free State and serves as a significant agricultural centre, not to mention an important railway stop on the Cape Town- Johannesburg railway.
Kroonstad is a pretty place, lying on the banks of the Vals River, a tributary of the great Vaal River. Its surroundings are characterised by big blue skies and wide open spaces – much of which has been given over to farming. Thus the warms hues of maize and wheat fields contrast with the blue of the sky. The area is also renowned for producing dairy, wool and meat products.
Kroonstad was initially developed in 1855, when the then Orange Free State gained independence. It was named the capital of the area for a brief period but its reputation as a British colony during the Boer War is more enduring. It was the site of a concentration camp where many a Boer woman and child were held. Today there is a memorial paying tribute to the concentration camp prisoners.
Kroonstad is home to many memorials and historical buildings, from the NG Kerk (church) to memorials of fallen World War 2 soldiers. There is a blockhouse just south of the town commemorating the 2nd Boer War too.
If history doesn’t interest you that much, there are a few other things to keep you busy. Apart from the quaint weekend flea markets and tea rooms dotted around town, there is an 18-hole golf course and the Vals River is popular among anglers, as is the Bloemhoek Dam. The Serfontein Dam on the other hand is frequented by boating and water sport fanatics.
Kroonstad may not have as many bells and whistles as the big cities, but it is a pleasant place to stop over on a longer journey.
