Krugersdorp Accommodatie
Krugersdorp is a small town on the West Rand in Gauteng. The Wiwatersrand area is where gold and other minerals were discovered in Gauteng and it is now divided into the West Rand and the East Rand, with the province’s capital, Johannesburg marking the midway point.
Krugersdorp and many of the other West Rand towns were once independent settlements, but as the small towns have expanded and Johannesburg has stretched its limits, the entire area has become one large conurbation. Krugersdorp thus falls under the same municipality as greater Johannesburg and is no longer an independent settlement.
Krugersdorp sprung up around the mines in the area which were extracting gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime. It was officially founded in 1887 by Paul Kruger, who was president of the area which was then known as the Transvaal.
Today Krugersdorp is a well-established town and despite officially being part of Johannesburg maintains its own identity and atmosphere. It also has all its own amenities, including a number of beautiful hotels in Krugersdorp. Visitors to the town will have access to a variety of things like hospitals and shopping centres. Furthermore, Krugersdorp is very accessible and one can easily travel between the town and Johannesburg proper or OR Tambo International Airport.
Some of the best things about staying in Krugersdorp are the number of interesting attractions nearby, such as the Cradle of Humankind – a World Heritage Site and one of Gauteng’s biggest attractions. The Krugersdorp Nature Reserve on the other hand is a 1400 hectare area with a variety of game. In the reserve you can try out all manner of safaris from a hot air balloon to mountain biking or walking. There are about 200 bird species in the reserve and close on 30 mammal species.
An intimate & secure, self catering cottage in the Hartebeestfontein Conservancy is the ideal location to explore the local attractions that the area has to offer. The nearest town is Hekpoort.
