Kuruman is a small town of roughly 13 000 inhabitants in the Northern Cape of South Africa. It is located in the east of this province on the Ghaap Plateau, 1131m above sea level, close to the border with the North West province. Mining is one of Kuruman’s main economic activities and Kuruman therefore attracts many business travelers. The area around the town is mined for iron ore, manganese, blue asbestos and tiger’s eye. Its close proximity to the vast, unique Kalahari landscape makes it popular for recreational travelers passing through too.
The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, a popular self-drive destination among South Africans is easily accessible from the town, as are a number of wildlife rehabilitation centres, such as the Kalahari Raptor Centre. The Kalahari Meerkat Project (made famous by the television program ‘Meerkat Manor’) is also based just outside of Kuruman.
The region is dry with a couple of small shrubs dotted about. The town however is an oasis, thanks to ‘The Eye of Kuruman’ (also known as ‘Die Oog’ or ‘Gasegonyana’) a fresh water spring which provides 20 million litres of water to the town every day. It is also home to an endangered cichlid fish.
Some people think of the spring as a ‘fountain of Christianity’, as it was in Kuruman that Robert Moffat established his missionary in 1821 and became the first person to translate the bible into seTswana – the local bantu language. Some 20 years later, David Livingstone showed up in Kuruman to start his missionary career and today it is still a base for the American Peace Corps volunteers.
