Ladybrand Unterkünfte
Ladybrand is a small border town in the Free State province of South Africa. It is located in the east of the province on the border with Lesotho, a tiny land-locked country officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho. It is a definite gateway to the country being the main border crossing point. In many ways it is also a commuter town as many of its residents work in Maseru, the capital of Lesotho 18 kilometres away.
Ladybrand was established in 1867 by a group of voortrekkers after they had conquered and captured (some of) the Basotho people against with whom they had engaged in a mighty war. The settlement was named Ladybrand after the mother of then president of the Free State, Lady Catherine Brand.
Today it is a slightly sleepy town with just less than 20000 inhabitants. The aesthetics of the town itself are inconsequential in comparison to the surrounding landscape – which is characterised by undulating hills and farmlands and the imposing Maluti Mountains to its east.
Ladybrand is the last designated stop on the Free State Tourism’s Cheetah Route. It is lauded for being a destination offering plenty of interesting history as well as some unique attractions like the Ben Nevis Cherry Wine Farm and the angora rabbit farm.
A few kilometres out of town you’ll find the ‘Rose Chapel’, an ancient sandstone cave which served as the first worship site for Anglican missionaries in the area. Today it serves as an important pilgrimage site for many Africans who come to pay homage to their ancestors. Numerous San rock art sites are also open to visitors and for keen fisherman the Amohela Ho Spitshog Dam is where you should head. There are many hiking opportunities in the surrounding mountains.
