Ladysmith Accommodatie
Ladysmith is home to a community of friendly-spirited people who take great pride in their small town, and their small town way of life. It is also home to the spectacular, world famous A cappella singing group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
This little town in northern KwaZulu Natal is located on the banks of the beautiful Klip River, which means Stone River, and is the site of several significant battles of the Second Boer War such as the Battle of Ladysmith. It is not too far from other significant historical battle sites such as Colenso and Spion Kop either. Located next to the town hall is the interesting Siege Museum of Ladysmith which details the battles of the siege of Ladysmith during the Second Boer War.
Ladysmith gets its delicate name from the wife of the British General Governor of the Cape Colonies, Sir Harry Smith. He was married to an exotically beautiful Spanish maiden who was named Juana Maria de los Dolores de Leon Smith. She was commonly referred to as “Lady Smith”.
Ladysmith developed when several Boers settled there after buying land from the Zulu king, Mpande, with Andries Spies as their commandant in 1847. These original settlers named the town The Republic of Klip River. The name was changed to ‘Ladysmith’ in 1850 on the 11th of October after the British appropriated the town.
The town is also located not far from Spioenkop Nature Reserve which is home to animals such as the the huge tank-like rhinoceros, a member of the big 5 and giraffe and antelope species.
