Lephalale is a coalmining town found to the North West of Limpopo province. The area has a number of border posts with Botswana, and the town itself is only 40 kilometres from the frontier. Lephalale is ideal base for those wishing to explore the Waterberg Biosphere as well as business travellers who are in the area to visit the town’s power stations and mines.
Lephalale has two faces. The first is the coal mining sector and energy generation industry. Lephalale is home to the largest direct dry-cooling power station in the world. It is also blessed with an abundance of coal, which is mined in the area and fed to the various power stations.
Lephalale’s second face is the rich natural heritage and magnificent scenery. Lying within the Waterberg Mountains, the region is graced with scenic mountain gorges, vistas of rocky hills dotted across the landscape and numerous geological sites of interest.
There are also many nature reserves in the area – offering tourists the opportunity to spot some of Lephalale’s finest wildlife and indigenous flora. Between Marakele National Park, D’Nyala Nature Reserve and the Mokolo Dam and Nature Reserve you can be treated to a typical African safari.
There’s a myriad of activities to take partake in when visiting Lephalale. These include game-viewing and bird-watching, in and out of the reserves. You can also visit many rock art sites, from a bygone era, painted by the San people and preserved for centuries. There are 4x4 tracks to explore too and, love it or hate it, Lephalale is one of South Africa’s hubs for commercial hunting so hunting safaris can be organised upon request .
Another aspect which makes Lephalale attractive to visitors is its mild climate. It has a low rainfall which falls mainly in the summer months, and the temperature throughout the seasons ranges from a minimum of 21°C in winter to a maximum of 32°C in summer.If you’re looking to explore the Waterberg region over a couple days, Lephalale is home to many luxurious hotels, cosy B & B’s and self-catering establishments.
