Llandudno Verblyf

The miniscule suburb of Llandudno is a Cape Town gem second-to-none. The half-moon shaped beach is the most protected on the peninsula, allowing one to soak up the sun without getting sand blown in your face, despite the wind conditions in other parts of the city. It also accessed by one of the most scenic roads in the whole of Cape Town.

From the beach, the lavish properties creep up the mountain side, providing a definitive boundary for this beautiful enclave. For many, Llandudno has a unique appeal which lies in its secluded nature – there are no commercial activities in the area at all, nor do any main roads pass through it. Thus it is a quiet, restful place with only the sound of happy beach-goers and waves to distract you.

Llandudno Beach itself is pretty small, flanked on either side by large granite boulders, smooth and rounded after years of natural erosion. It is a popular surf spot, although the water is freezing and the waves sometimes perilous for swimmers.

Should you wish to pop out for a bite to eat or a bit of exploring, a quick hop over the saddle of the mountain brings you to Hout Bay, a 5 minute drive away. Apart from exploring restaurants and shops, a visit to the harbour is a great place for a stroll and some fresh fish and chips. It is also the launching pad for boat trips to Duiker Island – a tiny land mass off Hout Bay which is home to a colony of seals and, in the right season, acts as a hunting ground for Great white sharks.

The Bay Harbour Market, just down the road is housed in an old fish factory, and offers numerous opportunities for retail therapy, as well as food stalls.

For the nature lover, the mountains surrounding Llandudno play host to exciting hiking trails and Cape Town’s unofficial nudist beach, Sandy Bay is a short walk away.

It is these attributes and more which make staying in Llandudno highly desirable.
