Louis Trichardt Accommodatie

Louis Trichardt is a small town in the far north of Limpopo province. As with many South African towns, its history is inextricably intertwined with that of the Voortrekkers. Its humble beginnings were nothing but a few caravans and a vegetable patch, presided over by Voortrekker women. The leader of the group was a man by the name of  Louis Trichardt, and despite  his untimely death on a journey to Delegoa Bay before the town was officially established, the settlement, once it became official in 1899, was named after him.

Today, Louis Trichardt is nestled at the foot of the Soutpansberg, in an exceptionally fertile pocket of land, even by Limpopo’s standards. Due to the subtropical climate, which produces warm, humid summers and summer rainfall, with cooler, more sufferable winter conditions, there are a number of fruit orchards growing in the surrounding area. The main produce includes  litchis, mangoes, bananas and nuts.

With Louis Trichardt lying in the shadow of the mountains, the town has a nice, tranquil atmosphere, almost as if the Soutpansberg is watching over the town. The area has a large biodiversity which is home to all manner of small insects, critters, rodents, birdlife and  members of the big 5. Louis Trichardt’s proximity to some of South Africa’s best game reserves is yet another draw card that attracts visitors to the town.

The area of Limpopo in which you’ll find Louis Trichardt is traditionally home to the Venda tribes. Wandering around looking at the wooden carvings, decorated clay pots and other souvenirs at the craft stalls thus adds a cultural dimension to a visit there as these crafts are very often created using traditional techniques and decorated with the same patterns that the forefathers from eons past would have used.
