Luderitz Verblyf

The town of Lüderitz is found in southern Namibia, on the western side of the country. It is located on the coast, in the Namib desert giving it a mild arid climate. Despite this aspect, or perhaps because of it, Lüderitz is a little treasure trove of interesting sites.

The city rests on a little bay, which was first discovered by Bartolomeu Dias in 1487. The settlement was only established though in 1883 and only flourished later still, in the early 1900’s when the locals finally realised the wealth of natural resources in the area, for starters, the whales, birds and fish. A whaling station was established, fishing ventures became more common, seal hunting was practised and guano was harvested. This was when it began its life as a trading post.

Today though none of these practises are carried out, save for fishing. Much of the town’s economy is dependent instead on tourism. Tourists come to ogle the colonial architecture – a surreal sight in this sandy outpost – and wildlife is a major draw card too. Thankfully whales and seals still inhabit these waters and there is an abundance of sea birds. In fact the area is recognised by a number of global conservation bodies, such as Bird Life, as an IBA (important bird area). Apart from coastal birds like gannets, cormorants and penguins you’ll also find ostriches and flamingos in the region.

Lüderitz has many remnants and reminders of the history which has taken place in the area. Shark Island just of the coast, for example, was the site of a concentration camp during the horrific genocide of the Herero and Namaqua people in the early 1900’s, and the ghost town of Kolmanskop, once a thriving diamond-mining settlement, is just up the road. It is an eerie place, enveloped by the sand over the years and now making for great photographic opportunities.

Luderitz Resensies

Luderitz Verblyf behaal 4 / 5 en is gebaseer op 3 resensies van gaste wat by Sleeping-OUT bespreek.

Luderitz
Lüderitz is a quaint, small town with not much going on probably due to COVID. The local homeless people (Washington in particular) are rather annoying and enjoy taking advantage of tourists. Also, the tourist info centre was closed and inoperable during our entire stay in Lüderitz.
