Malelane is a small farming town in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. While the town’s economy is largely based on agriculture, tourism has played a significant role throughout the town’s history, not least because of its proximity to the Kruger National Park. If you would like to stay near but not in the park itself, a stay in Malelane  with it’s numerous private lodges, is a luxurious alternative. Malelane lies just outside the Malelane Gate, one of the main entrances to the Kruger National Park, and is naturally a draw-card for tourists in the area.
Where agriculture is concerned, the subtropical climate influences the type of produce grown in the area. As such, the warm, rainy summers and cool winter temperatures and dry conditions create good conditions for subtropical fruits such as mangos, avocado pears and citrus. Winter vegetables and sugar-cane are also grown in the region and there is a large sugar mill in the town which is of course the final destination for the raw sugar-cane crops.
The town’s agricultural industry boomed in the late 90’s after the upgrade of the N4, a national freeway which connects South Africa’s interior cities with Maputo, Mozambique. This route is known as the Maputo Corridor, and is an important trade route. The increased traffic brought a little more action to the settlement, and now large chains like Spa and Pick ‘n Pay provide a constant demand for produce and the hordes of visitors passing through to check out the Kruger Park gives Malelane a boost.
Although widely referred to as Malelane due to the name of the Kruger park rest camp, the town’s official name is Malalane, a similar word but one which adheres to the traditional spelling. The name is said to either be a derivative of ‘la-la’ which means ‘to sleep’, a reference to the small town’s sleepy nature, or ‘eMlalani’, which means ‘Place of the Palms’, in reference to the subtropical plants found in the area.
Malelane is located about 400 kilometres from Johannesburg and makes a good stop-over point for travellers to Mozambique.
