Barberton Accommodatie
Forty-three kilometres from Nelspruit and 360 kilometres from Johannesburg you'll find Barberton, Mpumalanga's best-kept-secret. The tiny town of Barberton had its hey-day in in the 1800's, when gold was discovered there and subsequently grew to become the home of the first stock exchange in the then-Transvaal.
It was 1883 when alluvial gold was first discovered, followed by a gold reef in the hills nearby. As you might expect, the discoveries soon lead to an influx of fortune-seekers and wealthy businessmen in the mining industry. The town was declared a year later, in 1884 and named Barberton after a Mr Barber, who was one of the first to come across gold in the area. Soon there was an influx of not just people too but money and the town grew exponentially.
Later though, Barberton's growth slowed and today it is a quiet little town surrounded by breath-taking scenery, perfect for the city dweller desperate for a relaxing break. In the centre of town you'll find a marked heritage walk, but Barberton's major draw card is the nature surrounding it.
It lies in the De Kaap Valley, in the shadow of the Makhonjwa Mountains which, dating back 3.5 billion years, are amongst the oldest in the world. The town is surrounded by numerous hikes in these ancient mountains and there are also plenty of mountain bike tracks to sink your teeth into.
One of the walking routes outside town takes you through an old tunnel, a kilometre long, once used to transport ore from the mines to the old crusher, and on many other walks you can spot bird life such as the Knysna or Purple-crested turaco and Narina Trogon.
The best place to spot these birds and more is in one of the 6 nature reserves which are all within a 12 kilometre radius of Barberton.
